Road Builders HR Program Update

The BC Road Builders and Heavy Construction Association in partnership with the Industry Training Authority is launching the Road Builders and Heavy Construction Foundation Program in April. The Foundation Program is the first course in a series of industry apprentice programs. This one month introductory course is a mandatory component to proceed further into the following apprentice programs:

  • Asphalt Paving/Laydown Technician
  • Heavy Equipment Operator Technician
  • Utilities Installation Technician

Several other career paths will be included to next year's offerings.

In the Road Building & Heavy Construction Foundation Program, participants will receive an industry orientation, training in the basics of Safety and Civil Engineering Principles, and learn about the tools and equipment of the trade and how to maintain them. Upon successful completion of this course, individuals will have gained the following:

  • a certificate of completion from the Industry Training Authority
  • a First Aid certificate
  • a Flagging certificate
  • a WHMIS certificate
  • a Roadbuilders Safety Training System certificate

Individuals will also have a more complete understanding of:

  • Industry terminology
  • Safety around heavy equipment
  • Rigging and slings
  • Drainage systems
  • Aggregates and uses
  • HMAC testing
  • Industry equipment and maintenance
  • Environmental hazards and management
  • Basics of surveying on a construction site
  • Type of soils, soil compaction and density testing
  • Principles of excavation and shoring
  • Concrete quality control and testing

Participants of the program will also receive assistance in finding industry related employment near the end of the course.

Individuals completing the Foundation Program would be eligible to move on into further career streams in the apprenticeship program. There is no cost to individuals taking this program during the pilot phase starting in April, so be sure to take advantage of this course and sign up right away. The Industry Training Authority will be covering training costs for individuals participating, however participants will need to take care of their own living expenses and work attire (i.e. Safety Vest/Work Boots/Safety Eyewear).
